Eddie Lamb asked:

There is an incredible importance to a matter of how and why you should compare camcorders before buying, obviously with the most important reason being that you want to make sure that you will be getting the best quality and worth for your money that you can. There are so many options of camcorders available on the market today that is almost an obvious essential that you take the time to compare camcorders, otherwise how in the world would you know which one to get?

Why you Should Take the Time to Compare Camcorders

There are even websites that are specifically built to help you compare camcorders or other items, such as Bizrate, whose entire website is set up in order to help the customer select several items and choose between them. Bizrate is a company which is operated by Shopzilla, which is a leading comparison shopping service that was founded in 1996. The company’s mission is basically to enable shoppers to quickly and easily be able to find and compare and buy every possible item you could think of.

In fact, each month alone, Shopzilla connects over millions of customers with thousands of stores, and it should be known that Shopzilla also operates the Bizrate consumer feedback network that collects millions of consumer reviews of stores and products each year.

At the present time, some of the most featured camcorders that they offer you to compare between are: Sony Handycam DCR-DVD405 DVD camcorder, Canon XL2 Mini DV camcorder, Sony DCR-SR100 camcorder, and the Panasonic PV-GS500 Mini DV camcorder, for instance.

They also offer featured brands, in order to make it easier for you to narrow down your search, and their most popular listed brands include that of: Sony, JVC, Panasonic, Canon, Samsung, Hitachi, Toshiba, Aiptek, DXG, Gateway, Mustek, SVP, Sanyo, Sharp, and RCA.

It is quite obvious to see what the advantages of taking the time to compare camcorders - or any other product that you want to purchase for that matter - because in the end you will truly be saving yourself face. Therefore, you will soon realize that it well worth the small amount of time and effort to put into comparing the items, then it will be in the end and you didn’t and you end up having to pay for repairs or find that the item you purchased is otherwise not what you wanted.

How to shoot good digital video with your camcorder

How to shoot good digital video with your camcorder

Let me tell you from experience how important it is to know how to shoot good digital video with your camcorder before going on that vacation or filming that big event. When I was getting married my sister offered to film the happy day for me with her new camcorder, I agreed as it would save money on the wedding as a videographer could get quite expensive.

Let me tell you how wrong I was, the digital video was dark, shaky and blurred anytime she went into zoom or moved around the room. The sound was off and muffled and it was more of a headache to watch rather than a joy. In a nutshell, I wish I spent money on a good digital video shooting.

I don’t want people to make the same mistake that I did so to spread the word on my learning experience I would like to pass on some great tips on how to shoot good digital video with your Minidv camcorder.

Tip #1 - Do not record while walking or moving about as the digital camcorder cannot stay focused on a moving object. Choose a place to stand and begin by recording a starting point for a few seconds before moving onto the next object. Slowly and carefully pan the camcorder to the next point of focus and hold there for a few more seconds before you stop shooting.

Tip #2 - Avoid excessive zooming of objects, not only does it kill the camcorder battery faster, it can give the viewers a crazy headache. If there were a moment you’d like to catch up close, stand still and take your time while zooming and shooting video, also try to avoid any quick motions, as the image will blur.

Tip #3 - Make sure that the lighting around you is bright enough and do not point the camcorder lens directly facing sunlight, not only can this damage the video camera lens, it will also blacken the images making for an unpleasant movie. If you plan to be indoors, I suggest you invest in a camcorder light attachment that can easily be placed onto the video camera and turned on if needed.

Tip #4 - Last but not least, my favorite camcorder accessory by far has to be a Tripod. You can buy a cheap little mini table tripod for simple videos or you can invest in a larger stand up tripod for longer shooting of video. By using a tripod when recording, you can be assured that your images will not be shaky nor will the movie look amateur.

Features To Look For When You Buy A Digital Camcorder

Jim Johnson asked:

A camcorder is a great way to document the important events and experiences of your life just as they happened. Still pictures are great for some things, but nothing beats a high quality recording of audio and video from a special event. Because digital camcorders record information that does not degrade over time you can actually watch it years later and it will seem like just yesterday. So if you are in the market for a compact digital camcorder here are some features to look for before you buy:

1. Make sure that you get a digital camcorder that uses a LCD screen for a viewfinder. Once you get used to using a camcorder this way you will never go back to peering through an eyepiece again. Video is often shot while a person is moving or has to walk, and watching a viewfinder allows you to still see where you are going much better than is possible when using the eyepiece. You can also shoot from angles high above your head or low down to the ground and still keep an eye on the action as you film if the LCD screen can be tilted.

2. Look for a digital camcorder that uses at least a 10x optical zoom, although 15x or 20x is even better. There are two types of zooms used on digital camcorders, optical and digital. The optical zoom is the lens itself zooming in, and it produces a nice sharp image throughout it’s focal range usually. The digital zoom simply takes the image already gathered by the lens and magnifies it with no increase of video detail, so video that is shot using a lot of digital zoom can be grainy looking and not very pleasing to the eye. So try to get a digital camcorder that has at least a 10x optical zoom and try not to rely very often on the digital zoom capabilities for the best quality videos.

3. Keep any eye on the power usage of the camcorder that you want to buy. Some sip power and others drink it at a gulp, so look for a camcorder that will let you record continuously for at least 1-2 hours before recharging. Otherwise, you will need to buy an extra battery to carry with you instead.

4. Image stabilization is a very useful feature found in many digital camcorders these days as it will help eliminate some of the shakes that many folks introduce unknowingly into their videos while filming. They may not notice it while they are recording, but once you sit down and try to watch video that constantly bounces around you will really appreciate the image stabilization feature. Of course, image stabilization still cannot make up for wild swings of the camera lens, but it can help control normal camera shake.

There are other features to look out for when you decide to buy a digital camcorder, but the ones mentioned above will help narrow your choice down to those that will most likely do the best job for you and your video needs.

Choosing A DVD or Video Camcorder

Victor Epand asked:

Mini dvd camcorders use a tiny tape while mini dvd camcorders use a small dvd disc. As far as what camcorder to choose. It all comes down to what you want to do with the final video. If you’re looking for a camera to make video productions that you will edit on a computer, go with a mini dvd camcorder. Going with this option means the use of video editing software and can become a time consuming process: Capture video from the mini dvd tape onto your computer (no quality loss), edit that captured video using free or low cost editing software, distribute your edited video out to a dvd using your dvd burner.

If you’re looking for an all-in-one camera you can take on, say, a cruise and instantly make a dvd without any editing for all to view in any dvd player, go for the dvd camcorder. There are two forms of consumer cameras. dvd Camcorders, that is great for people who don’t want to make changes. Shoot, take the dvd out and then put it in a dvd player. The advantage is pretty straightforward. You can just edit without having to capture (depending on the editing system + hardware.)

I want to make sure we’re not talking about capturing on, say, a still camera as an avi.I’m talking about the $500+ systems that attach to the back of cameras like the XL-1s from canon.

It stores footage in MPEG-2 format. In MPEG-2 format, not every frame has all the information. That’s how you can store hours of footage on a dvd . MiniDV Camcorders (which uses fire wire, and you’d have to get a card for your computer that uses fire wire), permit you to capture the data off the tape in the camera. The footage is stored in “DV format’, where every frame has all the data. I’d pick MiniDV (if you want to be able to easily edit it). You’ll need a fire wire card. The tape stores the 0s and 1s (which is data). Fire wire permits you to slurp the data from the tape and edit it on the computer.

Not a “camcorder”, but a simple 8mm movie camera made for the typical point-and-shoot amateur photographer. Eastman Kodak made several million Brownie 8mm movie cameras in the 1950’s and early 1960’s, both with single lens and multiple lenses. The crank on the side winds up a spring motor, and then you can shoot about 20 seconds of film at a time. I’m afraid these cameras have no historical significance at all, they remain common as dust today, they are virtually unusable, and so they rarely sell for much more than $20.

After you install the new drivers from your camcorder manufacturer, try to switch the USB port, and then check the USB port version, if it is the same with the camera. You can find this in the camera’s documentation. Connect the camera by USB (it must be power off), and after that press the “power on” button, wait a little and go to My Computer, there must be a new driver, go on it and copy the files.

For best quality video, you need to transfer MiniDV or Digital8 video from your camcorder to your computer with IEEE 1394, commonly called FireWire or I. Link. USB will not work well with most camcorders to transfer video as they output USB 1 not “High Speed” USB2. USB is normally used for transferring still images and web cam features. Most editing programs will not transfer with USB; if they do it will not be the best possible video quality.

There are some dvd burners out there that do have a direct connection to the recorder available. The link is one such interface - it’s a Sony spec I believe. Generally, when you download video to a computer, the computer has to store the images digitally on a memory system at least temporarily because the ram is limited and video eats tons of memory.

Once it’s on your hard disk, there are numerous programs available like Avid Pro that will allow you to edit and manipulate the video like a professional. You can add titles, fades, intersect clips, add sound tracks you name it. Once you’re done editing, then you can select an option to permanently record it to a dvd if you like. You can also simply record it without editing of course.

Once the video is stored on the dvd , it’s basically permanent, unless you obtain dvd +RW discs, in which case you can record over it, erasing the original recording.

I’d recommend always recording the original video first to a dvd or some other permanent storage medium, and then upload the video from the dvd disc to a computer for editing. Once you’re done editing, use another DVD disc and burn it with your edited version. This way you always have the original handy and you can put it and the edited version in a safe place for the future when you’re an old **** like me and want to cry watching your little kids playing in the backyard.

Camcorders: Sony and Canon

Gill Critchley asked:

Camcorders are great gadgets to have as they allow the user to record moments that they would like to remember and watch again and again. Due to this love of camcorders, there are now many different makes and models available, some at very reasonable prices, so many more people can enjoy recording days and events that they want to retain in their memory. One of the most popular models is the Sony Handycam HDR-SR11. This camcorder is a top-of-the-range model that sells for around £750 and is considered one of the best hard drive models. This is a Sony camcorder that has had face recognition added to its list of features and this helps the camcorder then set the exposure and the focus. The x.v.Colour is still included in Sony camcorders and this is their name for the xvYCC colour space. The SR11 also comes with a remote control that makes a positive difference to the colour of the picture if you hook up the camcorder to your TV. This Sony camcorder also includes Picture Motion software. This lets you view your footage and make basic modifications to it. Another camcorder that’s out at the moment is the Canon FS100 and this is priced around the £250 mark so it is a lot more affordable. As Canon camcorders go, this model has very high quality looks regardless of its low price. This Canon is small and stylish and also has an expansive feature set, however, the reason for this device being so cheap is due to the quality of its video, the footage is not as clear as on some camcorders.

Due to many people wanting to record their precious memories, camcorders have become very popular. The colour space used in Sony camcorders is called x.v.Colour. As Canon camcorders go, this model has a small and sleek design for a very affordable price.
