How to shoot good digital video with your camcorder

Let me tell you from experience how important it is to know how to shoot good digital video with your camcorder before going on that vacation or filming that big event. When I was getting married my sister offered to film the happy day for me with her new camcorder, I agreed as it would save money on the wedding as a videographer could get quite expensive.

Let me tell you how wrong I was, the digital video was dark, shaky and blurred anytime she went into zoom or moved around the room. The sound was off and muffled and it was more of a headache to watch rather than a joy. In a nutshell, I wish I spent money on a good digital video shooting.

I don’t want people to make the same mistake that I did so to spread the word on my learning experience I would like to pass on some great tips on how to shoot good digital video with your Minidv camcorder.

Tip #1 - Do not record while walking or moving about as the digital camcorder cannot stay focused on a moving object. Choose a place to stand and begin by recording a starting point for a few seconds before moving onto the next object. Slowly and carefully pan the camcorder to the next point of focus and hold there for a few more seconds before you stop shooting.

Tip #2 - Avoid excessive zooming of objects, not only does it kill the camcorder battery faster, it can give the viewers a crazy headache. If there were a moment you’d like to catch up close, stand still and take your time while zooming and shooting video, also try to avoid any quick motions, as the image will blur.

Tip #3 - Make sure that the lighting around you is bright enough and do not point the camcorder lens directly facing sunlight, not only can this damage the video camera lens, it will also blacken the images making for an unpleasant movie. If you plan to be indoors, I suggest you invest in a camcorder light attachment that can easily be placed onto the video camera and turned on if needed.

Tip #4 - Last but not least, my favorite camcorder accessory by far has to be a Tripod. You can buy a cheap little mini table tripod for simple videos or you can invest in a larger stand up tripod for longer shooting of video. By using a tripod when recording, you can be assured that your images will not be shaky nor will the movie look amateur.

Sony Dcr-trv280 Camcorder

discount-battery.org asked:

The DCR-TRV280 is this year’s low-end addition to the Sony Digital8 series. What it lacks in manual control options it makes up for in price, and what it lacks in chic packaging it compensates for in ease of use. It’s the only Sony model that does not feature a touch screen LCD; instead control functions are dispersed atop the massive frame–to the user’s ultimate benefit. The camcorder has not evolved from its predecessor, the DCR-TRV260 (original battery code : sony np-qm91d, sony np-qm71d

The Sony DCR-TRV280 is a behemoth and the only Sony camcorder this year to not relocate its menu system to a touch screen LCD. Control is exacted via the panoply of buttons on the camcorder’s body. The measure of control will be limited as well. No manual white balance or shutter speed is offered, and the zoom toggle is disproportionately small.

The imager is the same as all Sony Digital8’s for the last few years: a 1/6” CCD with 290K effective pixels. Under bright light conditions, the DCR-TRV280 reproduced colors with decent accuracy and acceptable noise levels. The colors were, however, somewhat washed. Low light performance was generally poor, but no more so than the performance from its big sister, the DCR-TRV480. A solid 20x optical zoom comes with the DCR-TRV280, as well as a flashy 990x digital zoom, a sad, misleading feature meant to lure in unschooled consumers. (Digital zoom artificially enlarges the picture, distorting it in the process.)

Ease of use is perhaps one of the crucial factors that can lead someone to choose a Digital8 over a MiniDV camcorder. If so, the DCR-TRV280 will not disappoint. Given the lack of manual control options, this camcorder is designed almost exclusively for point-and-shooters. The buttons are all clearly marked for each purpose, and if even these small tasks confuse the user, there is an Easy button on the upper left side that relegates nearly all quality control to the camcorder.

The DCR-TRV280 does not take stills. A step up from the DCR-TRV280 sony np-qm71d, sony np-qm91d )will buy you this feature. Surprisingly, a Widescreen shooting mode is available, though it is not a true 16:9 aspect ratio. Ports on this camcorder include DV, A/V, and USB. Other features include Burn DVD, which allows you to burn the footage onto a computer with a DVD burner or to a DVD recorder. There’s also NightShot, Super NightShot, and Color Slow Shutter, which slows down the shutter speed in low light in order to capture more color information.

Battery life

Sony supplies a NP-FP30 lithium ion battery with the DCR-TRV280. If the user continuously records with the LCD open the camcorder will function for 1 hour, 18 minutes, and 20 seconds. This is slightly less than the time stated in the user manual, which stated an estimated time of 1 hour and 20 minutes. (We use fresh batteries for this test, but bear in mind that as the battery ages its maximum continuous recording time will decrease.)

Choosing The Right Camcorder For Making Web Videos

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Bruce Walls asked:

If you intend to start shooting video to use on your website and for submitting to video sharing sites for more exposure and to drive traffic to your site then make sure to consider the following points and spend your money wisely.

It is all too easy to overspend and pay for features that you do not need. Think of all the features that your mobile phone has and you never use so don’t make the same mistake with your camcorder.

The camcorder is the center piece and mainstay of your video production and if the camcorder you choose doesn’t have the needed features, it will be difficult or even inpossible, to produce a quality video.

Having a camcorder with the following features can be the difference between a video that will look professionally produced, or one that is obviously home made.

Here is a list of features to help you select the right camcorder.

MiniDV: The best and most flexible format. Consider HDD but give DVD camcorders a miss, if you do buy one then you will soon realize its limitations.

External Microphone Terminal: Required so you can plug in an external microphone. A must have. Check for the external mic terminal first, if it’s not there, choose another camcorder.

FireWire Terminal. Might be listed as a DV terminal or a IEEE-1394 connection. A must have so you can send and receive digital video between camcorder and computer.

Remote Control: Needed so you can operate the camera while recording yourself. Allows you to start the record, zoom, pause, etc. Extremely useful.

Headphone Terminal: Required so you can use headphones to check the audio being recorded. Another must have.

1/4″ or larger CCD: Avoid anything smaller. The larger the CCD the higher the resolution of the video.

10X Optical Zoom: Do not settle for less and do not be seduced by digital zoom which is pretty worthless for our needs.

Manual White Balance: Required to balance colors under all lighting conditions.

Image Stabilization: Steadies the image as you shoot. It doesn’t compensate for bad camerawork, but it can help smooth out a shot when you can’t use a tripod.

Tripod Socket: You would be hard put not to find this but worth mentioning.

Top or Side Loading Tape: Inconvenient to have a bottom loading tape when using a tripod.

Analog Video In/Out: Convert and record analog video to miniDV format or miniDV format to analog. Can connect to a VCR or 8mm camcorder. Most useful.

Manual Focus And Exposure Controls: Having the ability to turn off automatic control leads to better production as you become more experienced.

S-Video In/Out: Needed so you can record input from computer screens. Most useful.

Size Does Matter: A camcorder that is too small can be difficult to operate, will also have a smaller LCD. Look for a medium sized camcorder. When out and about take your digital camera for unexpected shots.

Finally: Stick with the major name brands, Canon, Sony etc. Avoid the temptation to buy a used camcoder from eBay. No need to spend more than the minimum if you can buy a major brand with all the above mentioned features, unless you are planning on moving up a level in your production then go for a ‘pro’ quality camcorder. My Canon MVX350i has all these features and cost me less than $500.

Research online and narrow down your list noting the prices. Then visit a store and have a ‘hands on’ before making your final choice. Check on the stores best price and if they are much more expensive then order online and just be patient until it arrives.

Charlize asked:

Hi, anybody knows if there are any digital cameras and/or camcorders offering optical zoom in video mode?

All I’ve ever had are camcorders and digital cameras that feature only digital zoom when recording video, and the quality of that zooming is lousy; you see the quality difference immediately, when playing back the videos.

If anybody knows, I’d appreciate some suggestions, preferably budget cameras, USB compatible, so I can transfer to my PC.

Thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions.

I tried opening the files with quicktime, and i had the same problem
